Council payout over lord mayor's failed tomato jump

Lorraine Mallon, a Belfast City Council worker, has agreed a settlement of just over £24,000 after being injured by the then lord mayor, Jim Rodgers, during a failed publicity stunt.

Ms Mallon was dressed as a tomato at a gourmet garden event at Botanic Gardens in Belfast in September 2007. The mayor at the time, Jim Rodgers, said photographers asked him to jump over the tomato costumed council worker for a photograph but he accidentally hit Ms Mallon on the head with his knee causing her to suffer a slipped disc.

The case went to Belfast High Court on the grounds of negligence and breach of statutory duty and the settlement amount of £24,021.75 was agreed, with the council also having to pay the costs of the action.
