DJ war ends in settlement

A legal case between two rival radio stations in Northern Ireland has been negotiated by solicitors at the last minute, rather than face judgement by a jury.

The battle began when 'shock jock' Joe Ferguson, who worked for Citybeat, broadcast potentially libellous comments about Cool FM DJ Sonya Mac in December 2004.

According to the Belfast Telegraph, Mr Ferguson and Citybeat agreed to pay substantial damages to Ms Mac for the distress caused to her by the attack on her "professional and personal reputation" without using the jurors who had already been selected for the case.

In court, Ms Mac heard a statement of apology from Mr Ferguson and Citybeat, which read: "The defendant withdraws every allegation that was made about Sonya Mac and apologises unreservedly to her for the upset she has suffered as a result of the unjustified attack upon her both professionally and personally."

Speaking to the Belfast Telegraph outside court, Ms Mac said: "I'm just glad that it is over and that they apologised - that's all I wanted."
