NI campaign tackles road traffic accidents

A new road safety campaign in Northern Ireland highlights that 95% of fatal crashes involve human error, and should not be called 'accidents'.

The graphic television advertisement being used in the 'Excuses' campaign can only be shown after the 9pm watershed, and tackles the notion that most road traffic accidents are unavoidable. The campaign comes at a time when deaths on Northern Ireland roads are at their lowest in 80 years. Speeding, drink driving and carelessness remain the main reasons behind road crashes according to the Department of Environment.

Alex Attwood, Environment Minister for Northern Ireland, said a crash is "a man-made tragedy that cannot be denied by excuses". He added that "crashes are preventable and we are all responsible".
