Newtownabbey Council defends work accident rate

The council for the Newtownabbey Borough of Northern Ireland has defended the high level of compensation paid to employees injured in work accidents.

It was revealed that the council paid out £137,000 in compensation to injured employees over the past 5 years, the third highest total of all regions in Northern Ireland. The Council issued a statement saying that a Health and Wellbeing Strategy was being implemented, and advised that compensation payouts were actually decreasing. It said that proactive steps to manage health and safety had contributed to a reduction in the number of work accidents suffered by employees.
