Belfast woman jailed for 113mph chase on M1

By Gary Adair

A Belfast woman has been jailed for 4 months for driving while disqualified, driving without insurance, dangerous driving and failing to stop for police, as she drove along the M1 reaching speeds of 113mph.

Desiree Lindsay, aged 29 from Belfast, was driving on the Westlink on 18th September, and ignored police attempts to stop her. She overtook an ambulance responding to an emergency call at a speed of 90mph and at times reached speeds of 113mph. She also drive through red traffic lights, forcing other motorists to take evasive action. The chase only came to an end when her car ran out of petrol in Lisburn.

Her defence solicitor argued that a psychiatric problem that "hadn't been addressed" was a factor for her actions. District Judge Fiona Bagnall said Ms Lindsay had shown a "staggering" disregard for the safety of others, and ordered her to serve 4 months in jail. She was disqualified from driving for an additional 5 years.
